Day 12-Christ Consciousness Celebration

Poinsettias in Hawaii thrive outdoors and over the years become large bushes. This one is growing as a hedge up at The Kula Lodge in upcountry Maui. The star-shaped leaf pattern has been felt to resemble the Star of Bethlehem and is part of its association with Christmas. I picked the poinsettia bouquet below from a big stand of plants growing up on the hill behind my house in Wailuku. He makes a striking centerpiece/alter on the table for my Christmas dinner.

It is said that Poinsettias require around 12 hours of darkness at a time to change color from all green and that they also require lots of bright light during the day to develop vivid red color. Like poinsettias, we have spent a long time in darkness and are now receiving lots of light in order to undergo our transformation. The Poinsettia, then, would appear to be the perfect flower with which to culminate our 12 Days of Christ Consciousness Celebration. Wishing everyone their requisite number of hours of dark and light, and may we feel the Love of Christ and one another as we transmute.
